Sri Lankan deep red garnets were historically traded through colonial gem routes alongside rubies and sapphires.
Often called “Ceylon Ruby” informally in older gem trade circles because certain dark almandine garnets visually resemble pigeon-blood to dark ruby tones under low light.
Unlike glass-filled or treated commercial stones, untreated garnets maintain natural crystal chemistry and colour stability.
Almandine garnet has relatively high density and strong lustre, giving a “heavier” premium gemstone feel in hand.
Under sunlight, quality almandine can show internal crimson flashes despite appearing dark indoors.
