What to Check in a Gem Certificate: Complete Explained (Sri Lanka Guide)

When buying a gemstone — especially high-value stones like Blue Sapphire, Ruby, or Cat’s Eye — the certificate is your best protection.

A Gem Certificate (also called a Gem Report) proves the gemstone is:

✅ Real
✅ Natural
✅ Correctly identified
✅ Properly valued

But many buyers don’t know how to read a certificate — and that can be risky!

Here’s a simple guide to help you check every important detail ✅

✅ 1️⃣ Gem Type (Species & Variety)

The certificate should clearly state:

✔ Gem species (e.g., Corundum)
✔ Variety (e.g., Blue Sapphire)

❌ If the certificate only says “Stone” or “Glass”… walk away!

✅ 2️⃣ Treatment Information

Most sapphires are heat-treated — that’s normal.
But you MUST know whether a gem is:

  • Heated
  • Unheated ✅ Rare & more valuable
  • Glass-filled ❌ Avoid
  • Diffusion treated ❌ Very low-value stone

📌 Treatment affects price more than anything else!

✅ 3️⃣ Color Description

Color should be described accurately:

Examples:

  • “Royal Blue Sapphire”
  • “Cornflower Blue”
  • “Vivid Red Ruby”

If description is vague…

⚠️ It might be a low-grade stone

✅ 4️⃣ Carat Weight & Dimensions

Always check:

✔ Carats
✔ Length x Width x Height (mm)

Example:
2.45 ct | 8.3 × 6.2 × 4.1 mm

If weight and size look mismatched → ⚠️ Something is wrong.

✅ 5️⃣ Clarity Grade

Clarity tells you how clean the stone is:

  • IF / VVS – Extremely clean (rare)
  • VS / SI – Light inclusions (normal)
  • I1 / I2 – Many visible inclusions (cheap)

Remember:
Natural gems always have small inclusions ✅

Zero inclusions = 🚩 usually synthetic

✅ 6️⃣ Origin of the Gemstone

Example:

  • Origin: Sri Lanka (Ceylon) ✅ adds value
  • Africa or Thailand origin — still real, but lower price

Origin = price difference

✅ 7️⃣ Photo & Report Number

Every authentic certificate has:

📌 Photo of the exact stone
📌 Unique report number

✅ You can check the number online to verify authenticity
❌ No number = Fake or unreliable certificate

✅ Trusted Gem Labs in Sri Lanka

Here are the reliable authorities you can trust:

🇱🇰 NGJA – National Gem & Jewellery Authority
🇱🇰 GLC – Gem & Lapidary Council
🌍 GIA, IGI – International labs

Avoid unknown labs with home-printed report sheets 🚫

✔ Prevents scams

📌 Always ask for a certificate BEFORE buying!
